Calls for more effective use of healthcare data at pharma and healthcare leaders’ event

3 December 15, London: Senior executives from the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies gathered in London today to discuss the future of healthcare intelligence and to learn about the introduction of Wilmington Healthcare.

With expert speakers drawn from pharma, NHS Trusts, service providers and technology companies, the overwhelming sentiment that emerged was that despite a plethora of UK healthcare data, it’s not currently being used effectively. This is to the detriment of patients and contrary to national healthcare policy objectives.

Wilmington Healthcare is a new proposition and forms an umbrella for Wilmington plc companies Binley’s, NHiS and OnMedica. It has been established with the vision to be at the centre of intelligence-led healthcare, enabling organisations to improve their ability to deliver improved health and social care. Wilmington Healthcare combines better access to healthcare professionals, supporting service redesign and developing stronger, closer relationships with the right people.

Speakers addressed the challenge of accessing the strategic intelligence needed to make decisions in key areas such as research and development by, for example, monitoring healthcare trends. The problem has been exacerbated by a variety of issues, including structural changes within the NHS, which have led to increasingly fragmented services, plus the continued delay in implementing the Government’s scheme.

With more digitally-savvy patients recognising a need for better access to information about their own care, there were calls for more widespread adoption of technology to support them. Patients need to be more involved in health strategy within local health economies to increase focus on integrated services.

Richard Adams, director of Wilmington plc’s Insight Division, said: “Healthcare in the UK stands at a crossroads in respect of the use of technology to improve patient care and to reduce cost within the NHS. The missing link currently is the effective use of data due to information being stashed in silos or unduly kept under lock and key due to a lack of understanding of the benefits it can deliver.

“Within Wilmington Healthcare we are now able to bring much more of this information together to support the redesign of services, based on what is already known to improve patient outcomes. Innovators and early adopters of this insight are making great strides by using Wilmington Healthcare companies’ services, and we’re genuinely making a clearly defined contribution to improved patient care.”
